Cozy Crime Reads Interview with Clare Chase

What attracted you to the cozy mystery genre?

I find it wonderfully absorbing, both as a reader and a writer. As a child I was already losing myself in classic, golden-age mysteries by authors like Agatha Christie. I loved trying to sort the clues from the red herrings and immersing myself in the adventure. I wanted to write the sort of books I loved reading.

What are a few of the essential elements that make a cozy stand out to you as a reader?

It’s a good question. I’d say a relatable-yet-distinctive amateur sleuth, a memorable supporting cast and a dash of humour amongst the drama. I love a vivid setting, too, and proper clues so that after the grand reveal, the reader thinks, ‘Oh, of course! Why didn’t I guess?’ not, ‘Uh, what?’

Do you have a favorite amateur sleuth?

Ooh, it’s just too hard to narrow it down! But the one that’s probably influenced me most is Miss Marple.

What inspired you to write your first cozy mystery?

It was down to a particular story. Even before I started reading Christie, as mentioned above, I discovered a children’s book called Septimus and the Danedyke Mystery by Stephen Chance. It featured a cop-turned-vicar who palled up with the local doctor to thwart a gang of thieves. The combination of danger, humour, and a wonderful sense of place had me hooked. From the moment I read it, I thought, ‘I want to be able to do that too’. I taught myself to touch type as a teenager, so I could write more quickly and drafted my first (appallingly bad) mystery when I was around thirteen years old. It never got published, needless to say!

Clare Chase’s Eve Mallow Mysteries are set in the quaint English village of Saxford St Peter.

How do you research and create the “cozy” elements in your books, like the settings and community?

Although I use fictional settings, they’re all inspired by real places, so I do go and visit and I use real maps too, though I change the street names and tweak the layout. I also research the real-life locations online, using community Facebook groups and local news sites – anything to get a feel for the concerns of the locals, and what’s going down.

The places I’ve used as inspiration are ones I know quite well. Eve Mallow, my obituary-writing sleuth, lives close to where my maternal grandmother did, and antiques dealer Bella Winter’s home, Hope Eaton, is based on where my uncle and aunt live. Both places are close to my heart.

The Antique Store Detective Mysteries are set in Hope Eaton, a village based on a real town.

What is one key step in your writing process that helps you transform an idea into a finished book?

It tends to be getting to know the murder victim well enough to work out who might have killed them. I need to keep them in my head for some time, and know what makes them tick, before I can come up with a series of suspects. The other key step is writing the book itself. However hard I plan, it’s only during the first draft that I see all the possibilities, and the story comes to life.

What advice would you give aspiring cozy mystery authors who want to start writing their first novel?

I’d spend plenty of time mulling over your series characters, especially your sleuth, before getting into any plotting. It tends to be the characters that keep readers coming back, and if your series takes off, you might be stuck with them for a long time, so it’s good to make them fun to be with on a personal level too!

There are also loads of useful resources online, this website being one! I’d really recommend Jane Kalmes’s Fiction Technician channel on YouTube as well – the videos are engaging and inspiring and cover all the nuts and bolts.
