Eat, Pray, Hex is the first book in the Crescent Moon Mystery series by Tara Lush. This story is a paranormal cozy mystery featuring a hot flash-prone amateur sleuth (Amelia) who gets in touch with her inner psychic after inheriting a haunted Florida inn.

Amelia was recently burned by a no-good ex-husband who stole her cookie shop business in their divorce. When she inherits the Crescent Moon Inn from an estranged family member, she assumes she’ll be able to sell it, make some money, and get her life back on track. But the hotel turns out to be haunted by a misbehaving ghost who goes out of his way to make the accommodations less than hospitable.

With her financial future on the line, Amelia tries to learn more about her fixer-upper Victorian inn and the troubled spirit who is clamoring to stay. Good thing she has a cute cat named Freddie Purrcury, a community of quirky new friends, and a hidden talent that is emerging at just the right time.

Reasons to Read Eat, Pray, Hex

Eat, Pray, Hex is one of those books that looks and sounds good from the start and gets better and better as you read. Author Tara Lush is a very talented writer with a strong, engaging voice. Her descriptions take you to the places she’s writing about, her tone puts you in just the right mood for every scene, and she’s super funny! Eat, Pray, Hex has some genuine laugh-out-loud moments thanks to Tara’s wickedly good sense of humor.

Another great reason to read Eat, Pray, Hex is the amateur sleuth, Amelia. She is a very relatable protagonist. She’s been knocked down and is attempting to get back up and dust herself off—all while having hot flashes and trying to manage an impossible situation with a peeling, struggling hotel and a ghost who doesn’t want to cooperate.

Although Amelia knows her way around a cookie recipe, her other talents are limited—or so she thinks. It turns out she has a hidden power that (with some honing) may end up being just what the inn needs. With the help of her found family and a few notes from her aunt, Amelia takes charge and reclaims her life. It is wonderful to watch her arc from the beginning of the book to the end.

The supporting characters are an eclectic bunch with their own quirks and talents. They include a charming and handsome historian, a wildly eccentric but lovable inn caretaker, an enthusiastic New Age bookstore owner, a modern and lively cowgirl, and a super adorable orange cat named Freddie Purrcury. These characters assist Amelia in a Scooby-Gang-like fashion and help make the story extra entertaining.

The story is set in Cypress Grove, Florida, which adds to the fun. Cypress Grove is the “psychic capital of the world.” It has a rich paranormal history and draws many people with psychic powers. The streets are lined with beautiful homes and unique parks resembling botanical gardens. One such park is Enchanted Eternity Park, a cemetery with recipes for tasty food on the gravestones. Cypress Grove is fictional, but it is based, in part, on another Central Florida town called Cassadaga, which is known as the "Psychic Capital of the World” because of the many psychics and mediums who call it home.

Eat, Pray, Hex concludes with a delightful recipe that you will have fun reading, making, and eating! The recipe is for a treat mentioned in the books and would make the perfect snack for a book club or a night of solo reading.

Eat, Pray, Hex is available in ebook, paperback, and audiobook. It can also be read with a Kindle Unlimited Subscription. If you enjoy audiobooks, you may want to consider listening to Eat, Pray, Hex. The audiobook version is read by Anna Maste, whose warm, articulate voice provides fantastic and nuanced narration for Amelia and the various characters in this story.

Top-tier cozy mystery! Kind of stunned how good it was. LOVED our perimenopausal main character Amelia, all of her friends, especially that silver fox Oliver, and basically everything else in the book. I want to live at the Crescent Moon Inn and have supernatural powers too.

Sometimes the most magical new beginnings come with whiskers

Before Amelia Matthews owned a haunted inn in Cypress Grove, she was just a divorced baker trying to survive her first New Year's Eve alone in her empty California house. Her daughter's away at college, her cookie business is gone, and her future feels as gray as the winter sky.

Then, a mysterious orange kitten shows up on the final day of the year. And somehow, rescuing him — and naming him Freddie Purrcury during a late-night Queen singalong — feels less like a choice and more like destiny.

This short story is a prequel to the Crescent Moon Mystery Series.
