Cozy Crime Reads Interview with Darci Hannah

What attracted you to the cozy mystery genre?

A happy little accident! I began my writing career in historical fiction. I thought I’d always write historical fiction… until the day no one was buying what I was writing. My agent suggested I write a mystery. I thought about it for a while, then realized that I really enjoyed reading mysteries, so why not write one? That was how it started. It wasn’t until I presented my first mystery manuscript to my agent that I was told I had written a cozy mystery! Imagine my surprise. I’m still learning about the cozy mystery genre and loving every minute of it!

What essential elements make a cozy stand out to you as a reader?

For me it’s all about setting and characters. Good, interesting characters just pull you into the story and make it come to life. After all, there must be something compelling about the main character to keep you reading. I also regard setting like a character. For me as a reader, the setting is just as important to the story. I pay attention to the way it’s handled, the way the characters interact with it, and what advantages and challenges it might bring. I love to read about small, charming towns in parts of the country/world that I’d love to visit. In other words, it makes for great armchair traveling!

Do you have a favorite amateur sleuth?

The first amateur sleuth I ever encountered was Nancy Drew. My mom gave me a couple of her childhood books and I took them to summer camp when I was twelve. I remember staying up late at night in my bunk reading The Secret of the Old Clock. I don’t remember the story, but I remember loving it, and thinking Nancy Drew was the coolest. As an adult, I started reading M.C. Beaton’s Hamish Macbeth series and her Agatha Raisin series as well. I loved both her sleuths and the UK setting. I think I’ve read every one of her books. Now I read a lot of cozy mysteries and have so many favorite sleuths that it would take me a couple of pages to list them all.

What inspired you to write your first cozy mystery?

Like I said, I didn’t know I had written a cozy mystery when I wrote that first mystery manuscript, titled, Cherry Pies & Deadly Lies. I wanted it to be modern, funny, and very different from my historical fiction, so I chose the most charming setting I knew, which was the Door County peninsula in Wisconsin. Cherry Cove, my fictitious lakeside village, looks very similar to the place I spent every summer as a kid with my family. It used to be the cherry capital of the world, and they still have a lot of beautiful cherry orchards, so choosing a cherry orchard and inn as my setting was a no brainer! Also, I love cherries so much, I can’t even explain my obsession with them! And baking. I love baking and have made oodles of cherry pies (and cherry everything!) over the years. Funny, but I find that writing about baking is very cathartic. Plotting a murder was a little more difficult for me, never having done that before, but once I embraced the fact that I had to have a murder in my mystery, I enjoyed that too. Cherry Pies & Deadly Lies was the glorious beginning to the path I am now on, and I am so very grateful to be here!

How do you research and create the “cozy” elements in your books, like the settings and community?

For me, writing culinary cozy mysteries is a great fit. I live in a charming small town in Michigan and often derive inspiration from our small-town festivals and goings on. I love small-town dynamics, the people, and all the charming shops and shop owners that make up a thriving downtown area. People in small towns tend to be friendly, and there’s a real sense of community. I simply take some of that experience and transport it to a charming, cozy, lakeside setting, usually on Lake Michigan, because I love that lake. The story grows from there.

Food is also important to my stories. I’ve been a baker and cook all my life, and even have a little professional baking experience due to my brother. He bought a bakery back in the 90’s, then hired me to work there for free… because that’s what good sisters do! Little did I know that I’d put that experience to good use by writing about a bakery in a lighthouse for my Beacon Bakeshop Mysteries! When I create recipes for my books, I try to highlight regional ingredients and specialties. It’s not very hard since I live in the region I write about. My Food & Spirits mystery series is the exception. For that I do a lot of research on the ghost story associated with the historic place I use as my setting. It will change with every book, so creating strong, likable main characters is a must to create the cozy feeling of the series. Also, the recipes I create are designed to reflect cultural foods associated with each setting. It’s a bit more work and research, but that’s half the fun.

What is one key step in your writing process that helps you transform an idea into a finished book?

When ideas pop into your head, it’s important to write them down. Unfortunately, these delicious thought-nuggets don’t always appear when it’s convenient, so I like to carry a pen and notepad in my purse. They can hit at any time, and often do. Another thing I do to generate ideas and work through my story is to take a walk. I begin every day with a long walk with my dogs. It’s part of my writing process and allows me to think through the twists and turns of my story. The trick is remembering all the juicy details until I get home where I can write them down!

What advice would you give aspiring cozy mystery authors who want to start writing their first novel?'

The first thing I’d say is to read extensively in the genre so that you have a good understanding of it. As you’re reading, think about what mysteries you like and what ones didn’t work for you. Also, think about what you can bring to the genre—a way you can put your own twist on a cozy mystery series. Who is your main character and what is their backstory? Think about that for a while. Then start writing your novel. Here’s the big secret to writing a novel. The only way you will ever write a novel is if you start writing it. Take your time and enjoy the process!
